Outdoor Education training is two-part, hybrid course that is required before troops or groups can cookout, campout, and adventure out which includes: packing gear, platform/cabinette/tent camping, building campfires, and cooking outdoors over a campfire, portable stove or grill for any daytime or overnight outdoor camping activity.
REGISTRATION CLOSE DATE: MONDAY, AUGUST 17, 2026
COURSE FEE: $38 per adult (fee covers cost of meals and trainings supplies). GSVSC refund and cancellation policies apply.
COURSE MIN/MAX: 5 adults/16 adults
LOCATION: Camp Sacajawea, 2124 Fox Hill Road, Lynchburg, Virginia.
COURSE PREREQUISITES: Must complete BOTH gsLearn courses below by Monday, AUGUST 17, 2026.

Participants must be registered by the registration close date and complete all gsLearn course prerequisites, and group assignments to be eligible to participate in the overnight session.

Registration for overnight will be cancelled for participants who do not complete required gsLearn courses by prerequisite deadline: August 17. Delays in completing your prerequisites hold up patrol and group menu planning assignments for everyone!

To be Outdoor Education trained for Girl Scouts, volunteers must complete the entire Outdoor Education course which includes:

GS 301A Outdoor Education Planning Session (online in gsLearn)

GS 201 Trips & Overnights (online in gsLearn)

Group meal planning assignment via Google Docs (shared by lead trainer)

Needs assessment (downloadable after registration)

Resource search homework assignment (downloadable after registration)

Submit health form to lead trainer prior to GS 301B Outdoor Education Overnight

Staying for the entire GS 301B Outdoor Education Overnight, which includes one overnight campout and Girl Scout outdoor cooking methods
Once registration closes for GS 301B Overnight, What YOU can Expect:

Council staff will verify all participants have completed both prerequisite courses in gsLearn

By August 28, lead trainer will assign you to a patrol group

By August 28, Lead trainer will share links to the patrol group menu planning Google Doc and email individual assignments

All overnight participants will be sleeping outdoors in platform tents. Prepare accordingly. Course is held rain or shine.

By August 17, download Additional Documentation from training registration. (Log into MY GS and click on training registration in your My Events Dashboard)

By August 28, communicate your contact information & availability to your assigned patrol group in the shared Google Doc shared by lead trainer

By September 8:

Submit forms and individual homework to lead trainer.

Complete group meal assignment: Meet and discuss group menu planning by the deadline given by trainer. All group members are required to participate in the menu planning assignment using shared Google Doc provided by lead trainer. Patrol groups are planning the meals that they will prepare and eat together throughout the weekend overnight.

Communicate food allergies or restrictions to your patrol group and all health restrictions on your health form.

Identify a grocery shopper and one alternate grocery shopper within your patrol group. Lead trainer will reimburse shoppers at the overnight session. Shoppers must provide receipts to receive reimbursement. (Shoppers MAY NOT bundle personal grocery expenses with Girl Scout grocery training expenses.)

Initial/approve group meal plans in Section 1 of Menu Planning Worksheet by the deadline.

Come prepared to the overnight, having completed needs assessment, resource search, group menu planning worksheet, and prep/homework for the overnight.

Participate in the entire overnight weekend session. Training is held rain or shine. Trainers will consult council staff during severe inclement weather.

Dress in layers and bring appropriate sleeping bag/gear rated for the current season.
