Float Your Boat: Roanoke River

Kayak approximately 6 miles on the scenic blueway trail of the Roanoke River. This section of the blueway travels through Salem and is a good intro to kayaking. This float is suitable for beginners and intermediate paddlers. Kayaks, PFDs, and other necessary gear is provided. Event is led by Adventurers coordinators trained in leading kayaking trips and river safety. Location may change based on weather and water conditions.  .

Who:  Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors (11+ years or older)
Fee:  $25/participant 
Min/Max Girls:  3/14
Badge/Patch Included?:  no; girls may purchase additional Adventurers merchandise (patch, decals, bandanna, ballcap, performance t-shirts); details listed on the event registration.

Note:  If WATER LEVELS are too low on this river to float our boats, then we may change our float to another river location (such as the James River or Maury River). If you are unable to travel to this new location, then refunds will be issued. 

ADULTS will only be accepted if spaces available are not filled by girls, and only with paddling experience. Please let us know on registration if you will be bringing your own boat and PFD; this is encouraged if you are more comfortable in your own gear. All adults participating must be registered Girl Scouts, have a cleared background check, and have taken these two trainings: GS104 Orientation for Support Volunteers and 281 Red Cross Water Safety for Parents and Caregivers (Volunteers). There is a 275 lb. weight limitation recognized for kayaks.

Adventurers Scholarship
Through the generosity of donors, a scholarship fund has been established in honor of our group’s founder, Barbara Duerk, to help girls participate in Adventurers activities. Requests may not be more than $100/year, and each application will be considered on a case by case basis. Details, criteria and application for this scholarship fund can be found here . It is for girls ages 11-17 and in grades 6-12.
