Take a walk back in history as we explore the Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge
Tunnel on this 4.5 mile hike. This tunnel is a historical landmark
and a must-visit destination for adventure seekers! Lace up your
hiking boots and explore the 4,273-foot-long tunnel which runs through
Afton Mountain in Virginia. A former railroad passageway is now home
to a variety of animals: salamanders, frogs, crayfish, insects and
bats. The tunnel's unique environment has a cool, consistent
temperature year round similar to a cave and has a small waterfall
flowing down the rock near the eastern entrance. NOTE: flashlight is
needed for our tunnel walk and exploration.
You will
also learn about the 10 essentials to take on a hike. This fun day
also includes earning the Vitamin
N patch. We will enjoy the outside rain or shine!
