Outdoor Education training is two-part, hybrid course that is required before troops or groups can cookout, campout, and adventure out which includes: packing gear, platform/cabinette/tent camping, building campfires, and cooking outdoors over a campfire, portable stove or grill for any daytime or overnight outdoor camping activity.

Prerequisite: Complete 281 GS 301A Outdoor Education Planning online course in gsLearn by AUGUST 21, 2025. Every participant must complete GS 301A by the deadline in order for meal planning and patrol assignments to be conducted via Google Docs.  Do not procrastinate or you will hold up assignments for others

Both GS 301A and GS 301B must be taken in the same training season (fall or spring). 

Once registration closes for GS 301B Overnight, what you can expect :

  • Council staff will verify all participants have completed 281 GS 301A Outdoor Education Planning Session course in gsLearn.
  • Lead trainer will assign you to a patrol group.
  • Lead trainer will share links to the patrol group menu planning Google Doc and email individual assignments.
  • Participants will be sleeping outdoors in platform tents.

What We Expect of You:

  • Complete 281 GS 301A Outdoor Education Planning Session course in gsLearn by August 21, 2025.
  • Quickly respond to trainer emails.
  • Download Additional Documentation from training registration. (Log into MY GS and click on training registration in your My Events Dashboard)
  • Communicate your contact information & availability to your assigned patrol group.
  • Identify a grocery shopper and one alternate grocery shopper within your patrol group.  Lead trainer will reimburse shoppers at the overnight.  Shoppers must provide receipts for reimbursement.  ( Shoppers MAY NOT bundle personal grocery expenses with Girl Scout grocery training expenses.)
  • Complete group meal assignment: Meet and discuss group menu planning by the deadline. All group members are required to participate in the menu planning assignment using a Google Doc.  Patrol groups are planning the meals that they will prepare and eat together throughout the weekend overnight. 
  • Communicate food allergies or restrictions to your patrol group and all health restrictions on your health form.
  • Initial/approve group meal plans in Section 1 of Menu Planning Worksheet by the deadline.
  • Come prepared to the overnight, having completed needs assessment, resource search, group menu planning worksheet, and prep/homework for the overnight.
  • Participate in the entire overnight weekend session. Training is held rain or shine. Trainers will consult council staff during severe inclement weather.
  • Dress in layers and bring appropriate sleeping bag/gear rated for the current season.
  • Remember! The Council Trainers are volunteers too.
  • Plan to have fun!

Registration Close Date: AUGUST 21, 2025 at 5 pm

Fee: $38 per adult (fee covers cost of meals and trainings supplies). GSVSC refund and cancellation policies apply. 

Min/Max:  5 adults/16 adults

Location: Camp Sacajawea, 2124 Fox Hill Road, Lynchburg, Virginia.

To be Outdoor Education trained for Girl Scouts, volunteers must complete the entire Outdoor Education course which includes: GS 301A Outdoor Education Planning Session (gsLearn online course), online group meal planning assignment via Google Docs, needs assessment, resource search, homework assignments, and the in-person GS 301B Outdoor Education Overnight Session which includes one overnight campout and Girl Scout outdoor cooking methods. Participants must be registered by the registration close date and complete all assignments to attend.  Participants must stay for the entire overnight weekend session.
