Join this beginner's backpacking trip to Shenandoah National
Park where we'll take in mountain vistas, cascading streams,
waterfalls, and the Rapidan Camp historic site! The group will meet on
Sunday, July 28, and travel to the park's Big Meadows Campground to
spend the night. The next morning, we will hit the trail and backpack
5 miles and camp along Laurel Prong Stream. The next day will be spent
exploring Rapidan Camp, a National Historic Landmark which was the
retreat for President Herbert Hoover and First Lady Lou Henry Hoover
(who served on the first board of directors when Girl Scouts was
incorporated in 1915). Then we'll hike out 2.5 miles to the
trailhead.
There will be a mandatory planning and
training session on Sunday, June 29, from 2:00-5:00 PM at a location
central to the group. No backpacking experience is required for
this event. Backpacks, tents, stoves, and other equipment are
provided, making this an economical way to discover the joys of
backpacking.
