GSVSC Outdoor Education teaches volunteers how to progress their troop’s/group’s activities into the outdoors and develop skills to be used and taught to girls, ensuring a positive, fun. and safe outdoor experience. This training is required before troops/groups cookout, campout, and adventure out which includes: packing gear, platform/tent camping, campfires, menu planning and cooking meals outdoors over a campfire, portable stove or grill for any daytime or overnight outdoor camping activity. To be Outdoor Education trained, volunteers must complete the entire Outdoor Education course to include:

>> GS 301a Outdoor Education Planning Session (online or in-person)
>> group meal planning assignment using Google Docs
>> needs assessment
>> resource search homework assignment
>> GS301b Outdoor Education Overnight Session weekend campout

Both GS301a and GS301b must be taken in the same training season (fall or spring). Attendance for the entire weekend is required during the GS301b Overnight Session. The GS301a Planning Session is a prerequisite for the GS301b Overnight Session and must be completed by the registration close date of the GS301b Overnight Session. This is to allow sufficient time for the council trainer to assign patrols and participants to complete the assigned pre-weekend group menu planning using Google Docs and preparation homework. The GS301a Outdoor Eduation Planning Session is available as an in-person or online training; GS301b Overnight Education Session is an in-person only training.

To attend in-person training sessions, registration is required online or through the council registrar. To enroll in the online course, go to http://onlinetraining.gsvsc.org. If the maximum is reached for the overnight session, we will register only two adults per troop for the course. Volunteers will need a pocket knife and #10 large metal can for the outdoor overnight weekend session. Participants should bring pen, paper, and health history (#2072), and homework assignment to the overnight. Additional items needed for the overnight session will be shared during the GS301a Outdoor Education Planning Session.
